Whether you’re an avid DIYer or someone working in construction, the days of eyeballing, using a string, or a box-beam level should be a thing of the past because laser levels are the new standard.

Of course, with so many different options on the market, it can be hard to figure out which one you need and which one is actually good, but don’t worry, I’m here to help.

I’ve used them all, from dot lasers to 360-degree self-leveling lasers, and the following five are the best of the best no matter what it is that you do. These are my best solutions for a wide variety of needs.

My favorite 360 laser has to be the DOVOH P3-360G.

The lasers are super accurate. They can self-level with ease up to 4 degrees, which is about twice as good as some of the competition I used over the years.

If you have it tilted by more than 3–5 degrees, it’ll beep and let you know you’re off.

You have three planes, one vertical and two vertical ones, which comes in handy if you’re doing something like cabinetry and need to align more than a few elements.

Also, since they’re green (as opposed to red), they are visible indoors and outdoors, no matter how much light there is.

You can clearly see them from 30 feet away in broad daylight (even the sides, which are a bit dimmer), which is not something I’ve seen too often.

The laser can reach much further (up to 200 feet), but it requires a separately sold laser receiver to work.

The body is super tough and durable. It’s actually IP54 resistant (has no visible gaps, rubber gaskets inside the battery slot, etc.), so it’ll handle light rain, splashes, and dust.

It’s also shock-proof, but I wouldn’t recommend tossing it around, as there’s always a chance you mess it up.

This durable three-plane laser comes in a heavy-duty box with all the gadgets you want and need. It also comes with a super functional and height-adjustable mounting bracket.

You can mount it to a tripod, hook it onto a nail, clasp it onto anything (the clasp is adjustable), or stick it to any metal surface (or an in-wall stud) because the mount pulls apart, revealing strong magnets.

You also get two batteries, a USB-C charging brick for both the level and batteries, safety goggles, a mounting screw for various tripods, and a tinny little remote to turn the lasers on and off without having to touch the laser itself.

A spare battery is one of my favorite things with the DOVOH 3D Model. You can swap a drained battery in a few seconds and go about your job without interruptions.

Keep in mind that the single battery will last for more than 8 hours with all 12 lines, but just in case you haven’t recharged it from the last project, the second one will come in handy.

Pros

  • Super accurate lasers
  • Easily visible in broad daylight
  • Quick self-leveling
  • You can lock the lasers manually
  • Mountable to any surface

Cons

  • Not ideal for floor work
  • You have to buy the laser receiver separately

The DOVOH P4-360G is the improved version of the P3-360G. They’re essentially the same thing, except for the extra laser the P4 features. So, everything I previously said still applies to this laser.

The major difference is, of course, another horizontal plane you get with the P4-360G. This extra laser comes in handy for near-ground-level work.

So, if you’re doing some floor tiling and have to cut tiles for a tiny skirt and want to make sure it’s all level, this thing can help you a ton.

It’s also super useful when you’re doing some wainscotting or something along those lines, and you can benefit from two horizontal lines to make sure everything sits evenly.

For example, I wanted to hang some pictures along the staircase, and since they’re all differently sized, I had to use the P4 with two horizontal lines, lock the lasers, tilt the level to match the railing and center the pictures using two lines instead of one as a frame of reference.

Locking the lasers (which you can do on both P3 and P4) is a super handy feature. It’s ideal when laying 45-degree tilework or when you just have to follow another line (like the railing).

One thing worth noting is that the P4’s battery does last a bit shorter when all 16 lines are on.

You will get about 6 hours from the DOVOH 4D level in this case, but then again, I’ve rarely had to use more than 12 lines for more than half an hour at the time, so that’s not something to worry about.

Finally, one thing I didn’t mention (while we’re on the subject of batteries) is that you don’t have to use them. You can plug the laser into the wall and run it that way.

Pros

  • 16 laser lines, 360-degree coverage
  • Great visibility in all conditions
  • Comes with a spare battery
  • Super accurate with no deviation at 30 feet
  • Mountable to any surface

Cons

  • You have to buy the laser receiver separately

DeWalt’s DCLE34030G laser level is, without a doubt, the most durable and well-made laser level I’ve ever used.

It’s heavy, and you can feel the material quality as soon as you pick it up. Just like DOVOH, it’s sealed in all the right places, so it’s actually IP54 resistant.

Unlike the P4-360G, the DeWalt laser level comes with three lasers, once again, one horizontal and two vertical, so apart from some really low-profile close-to-the-floor jobs, there’s nothing you can’t do with this laser level.

As expected from a brand like DeWalt, the self-leveling is quick and precise (takes about two seconds tops), and the visibility is top-notch.

Depending on the conditions, you can see the laser up to 50 feet away with your naked eye.

What’s super cool about this DeWalt laser is that it is powered by their 20V MAX 2.0Ah battery, meaning that if you have their drill, nail gun, or anything else from DeWalt, you can switch the batteries around and never run out of juice.

Finally, the laser level comes with a nice little micro-adjustment knob on the bottom, so you won’t have to reposition the laser too often when doing tiling or something along those lines.

Cons

  • Too heavy for most regular tripods
  • Too expensive for DIYers
  • Reciever sold separately

CIGMAN is probably any DIYer's best friend. It’s relatively inexpensive (especially compared to DeWalt’s laser), it’s easy to operate, it’s super compact and lightweight, and it gets the job done.

Like every other laser on my list so far, the CIGMAN laser has 360-degree coverage and can emit up to 12 lines at once.

Once again, you get one horizontal and two vertical lines, which is more than enough for any home improvement project.

It’s very accurate, too. On paper, it’s the most accurate laser on this list, but objectively, I haven’t seen any difference between these laser levels. They were all perfect.

One of the standout features of this laser level is the ability to adjust the brightness of the lasers.

As I’m sure most of you know, almost no one wears safety goggles when working with these lasers, so setting the brightness down to a minimum in low-light conditions where the laser is fully visible is a great thing.

This also lowers the battery consumption, which is great because you don’t get batteries with the CIGMAN.

You simply charge the laser level itself and use it for up to 30 hours (depending on brightness and the number of lines used).

However, don’t worry. While this could be inconvenient in theory, from my experience, running 8 lines at a time will give you upwards of 8 hours of battery life, which is more than enough.

Finally, the CIGMAN laser comes with its own mini tripod with adjustable legs.

Basically, you get a low-profile stand (that also spins around its axis, so you can easily align your lines) that you can adjust to keep the laser straight so it can self-level.

This is great if you need to keep your laser on the ground, grass, or just some pile of boxes if you don’t have a tripod handy.

Pros

  • Very accurate and easily visible
  • Mini tripod with a rotating base for super fine adjustments
  • Smaller and lighter than most laser levels
  • Adjustable laser brightness

Cons

  • No swappable batteries
  • Magnet-only mounting bracket

If you’re just looking for a level to help you mount TVs or hang family pictures on the wall, the BOSCH GLL50-20 is all you need.

This is a simple, 2-line laser level that I used for a really long time until I switched to DOVOH, mostly because this one’s red.

While red lasers are more battery-efficient, they’re practically impossible to use outdoors.

I’ve struggled indoors, too, if the light is too bright. But, as I said, it'll do as long as you’re using it for something simple.

I wouldn’t call it ideal for any larger projects. Its visibility is limited, and the range is 30 feet at most, even though it is rated for 50 feet. It is precise, though, so don’t worry about that.

One thing to note is that if you don’t want to use alkaline batteries, you must buy the Li-ion battery separately, which I don’t really recommend, as you’ll rarely use a level like this for more than 30–60 minutes at a time.

However, considering this level is significantly cheaper than every other product on the list, I’d say it is definitely worth buying.

Always Consider These Important Aspects Before Buying

While you can choose any of the DOVOH or other laser levels from this list, it’s also good to know what to look for when shopping for one.

What Jobs Do You Need It For? (Types of Laser Levels Explained)

Type

Application

How It Works

Line Laser Levels

Basic leveling tasks (hanging pictures, installing shelves)

Projects horizontal or vertical lines

Rotary Laser Levels

Accurate leveling over long distances (grading land, laying foundations)

Emits a 360-degree laser beam

Dot Laser Levels

Alignment tasks (plumbing, electrical work)

Creates dots at specific points

Cross-Line Laser Levels

Versatile use (tile work, framing, interior design, construction)

Projects intersecting horizontal and vertical lines

How Good Is The Accuracy?

In most cases, like with the DOVOH laser levels, you’re looking at 1/8th of an inch of accuracy over 30 feet, which is also the industry standard. Anything below that may not be enough for anything more intricate than basic leveling tasks.

You can find lasers with 1/4th of an inch or 5/9th of an inch, but I’d stay away from those if you’re serious about keeping things precise.

What Range Does It Offer?

Almost any laser level will work up to 30 feet with no problems, which is more than enough for most DIY projects and some basic homework.

However, good, reliable laser levels will offer at least 100 feet of range without a receiver in low-light conditions.

For any more than that (usually 300 to 500 feet), which may be necessary for outdoor application, you will need to buy a laser receiver, which will beep continuously once it captures the light emitting from the laser that you can’t see with your naked eye.

What Beam Color and Orientation Does It Offer?

I always recommend going for a green beam because it is 3–4 times more visible than the red laser beam.

While the red bean has advantages when it comes to preserving battery life, battery life is not a big concern in the real world.

Most lasers offer more than 8 hours of battery life as you’ve read already, which is about as long as you would work on any given day.

Is It a Self-Leveling Model?

Self-leveling is a big deal because you can’t quite tell with your naked eye if your laser sits completely horizontally, and all you’re really doing is aligning things in a strait line.

Self-leveling lasers like DOVOH can easily adjust the lasers to account for up to 4 degrees of tilt so that they can project perfectly straight lines onto a wall or any other surface.

What Do You Get For The Price?

In most cases, every laser level comes with basic necessities like a mounting bracket and a charger. However, in some instances, you may even get spare batteries and protective goggles like you do with DOVOH.

You will rarely encounter a mounting tripod or a receiver, although truth be told, most receivers work with most levels, so if you have an old one lying around, chances are, you don’t need a new one.

As for the lasers themselves, the price will usually dictate how many lines and planes of reference you’re getting, and if you’re going for 360-degree coverage and three planes, you can expect to spend upwards of $200 for a reliable product.

So, Which Should You Buy?

The DOVOH laser levels definitely offer the best bang for your buck. They’re built flawlessly, work as intended, and come with a ton of accessories that will make your workday easier.

Of course, it all depends on what you need to use it for and whether you’re doing this for a living or just doing little projects around the house, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that a laser level is one of the most essential tools in any man’s toolbox.
